As the largest media provider in Greater Lansing, the Lansing State Journal depends on its advertising sales representatives to build and maintain important business relationships with our advertisers.
That's why we make our sales representatives partners in our success, with compensation that includes competitive salaries and a lucrative commission structure. And, our team of graphic artists provides the design services our clients rely on for ads that get results. Together, our advertising staff are responsible for bringing more than 750 retail advertisements to our readers every week, along with more than 30 preprinted inserts and sales flyers. In addition, our classified sales staff helped bring more than 940,000 classified ads to our readers last year alone. |

Each day, our district sales managers, home delivery managers and single copy manager oversee a carrier force of more than 800 who handle distribution of more than 93,985 newspapers daily.
This complex job takes planning, organization and a dedicated team of assistant district sales mangers, carriers, drivers and customer service people. In addition, our team of telemarketers work to introduce the newspaper to new readers and expand our services among current subscribers. |

As the promotional "nerve center" of the Lansing State Journal, the Market Development Department works with News, Circulation, Advertising and Human Resources to market the paper to readers, subscribers, advertisers and the public.
Each day, the department's market research staff, copywriter, graphic artist and press operator work to create and produce sales presentations, in-paper promotion, print and broadcast advertising, billboards and direct mail aimed at increasing readership and advertising. |

As the financial center of the newspaper, the Business department handles billings and accounting for all advertisers and subscribers, as well as providing payroll services.
Their attention to detail, efficiency and ability to process large amounts of new information each day make our business analysts vital to maintaining a healthy bottom line. Our information systems staff help the Business department and others throughout the company achieve this goal by maintaining and programming our computer networks. |

Attracting, recruiting and retaining the right people to staff each of the newspaper's departments is the job of the Human Resources department.
Each day, our human resources professionals use a variety of methods to locate and screen candidates for the many important positions within the company. They also are involved in negotiating and overseeing the benefits and compensation packages that help us retain great employees and stay competitive. |
Production

Jay Monroe, Day Camera Supervisor, joined the Lansing State Journal in 1993 as a Platemaker Apprentice. Jay has been selected to participate in Gannett's "Grow Our Own" employee development program. |
Each day, our layout technicians, press operators and distribution center personnel produce and assemble more than 93,985 newspapers. That's more than 30 million newspapers every year!
To accomplish this monumental task, our Production department uses an average of 12 tons of newsprint and 500 pounds of ink per day. Because the Lansing State Journal cares about our environment, every single roll of newsprint we use contains some recycled paper. And, all our colored inks are soybean-based, making them more earth-friendly than petroleum-based inks. |

Sidney Fung, Information Systems Director, joined the Lansing State Journal as a Systems Analyst in 1993. |
The Information Systems department is responsible for coordinating technology changes for the Lansing State Journal. Computer and networking services are provided to all user deparments such as Business payroll computing services, accounting system computing services, Advertising and Circulation billing services, E-mail services for Administration and Human Resources departments, editorial system services for the News department and imaging services for the Production department. It is the mission for I.S. to use technology to help improve efficiency. The I.S. staff will assist all departments to achieve their goals by providing operational support and custom programming for our computer systems. |
